The process of picking out and putting on an appropriate outfit for the high school prom is one of the most important experiences that adolescence brings.
It’s an important time for young people of all genders, but not everyone can afford to wear what they want.
Addi Rust, a senior in high school in Indianapolis, joked with her prom date and best friend Parker Smith that he should make her a dress because she couldn’t afford to buy the dress she had found.
According to Fox59, they initially laughed at the concept, but Parker later told her, “You know what, I think I could actually make your prom dress.”
He took on the challenge, learned how to sew by himself, and finished the dress in a few months. He had no idea how much his efforts for his best friend would alter his life at the time.
He first sketched out the dress, which he designed entirely independently, to get it started. He then learned to sew by himself with help from his grandmother.
He intended to finish the dress before prom, but due to his obsession with perfection, he ended up working until the last night.
He made multiple changes to the dress because he wanted his prom date to wear the perfect outfit.
Parker had no idea at the time how his actions would affect his future. He began by sketching the dress, which he completely designed himself.
He then learned to sew by himself with help from his grandmother. He had planned to finish the dress before prom, but because he was a perfectionist, he ended up working on it until the last night.
He altered various parts of the dress multiple times because he wanted his prom date to wear the perfect outfit. Parker’s perseverance and dedication were rewarded when Addi performed like a princess on prom night.
Parker, who aspires to design costumes for Broadway productions, was offered the opportunity to work because their story was so well known.
When he goes to college, he wants to major in musical theater and costume design. When asked about the attention from the media, Parker said, “It was a completely unexpected outcome.”
Before I started making the dress, I had very little sewing experience. We were just having fun, despite the attention.
