Her mother lay in the snow, bleeding, her paw torn by a rusty trap. The wind howled between the spruce trees, and the world was covered in white. Only the thin whimpers of the pups broke the silence.
They tried to warm their mother, pressing themselves against her, whimpering and looking toward the sky as if someone up there could hear them. Their small bodies trembled in the cold.

Far away in the forest walked the game warden Niklas. He was searching for traces of poachers, but when the wind fell silent for a moment, he heard something – a faint sound, almost like crying.
He followed the sound and stopped, astonished, when he saw them. Before him lay a she-wolf in the snow, caught in an iron trap, two small pups at her side.
He slowly set down his rifle so as not to frighten them. They looked at him, not with hatred, but with a strange expectancy.
Niklas knelt, drew out his knife, and struggled against the cold metal until the trap opened. The wolf flinched, but did not flee.
She remained lying there, breathing heavily, and watched the man. He tore a piece of cloth from his jacket and wrapped her paw as best he could, then backed away.

She rose, limping, licked her pups, and looked toward him once more before slowly disappearing between the trees. The snow was falling lightly now, the wind had stilled. Niklas stood there alone, filled with a quiet warmth he could not explain.
He understood that he had witnessed something greater than a meeting between man and animal — a moment of silent grace in a frozen world.
